Yijing Battle
The Romance of the Three KingdomsThe Battle of Yijing is presented as a decisive victory for Yuan Shao over Gongsun Zan, achieved not by storming the latter’s defenses but by undermining them. The fall of Gongsun Zan’s fortified tower ends his resistance and strengthens Yuan Shao at a moment when Cao Cao is already measuring the danger posed by the northern warlord.
Background and Strategy
Gongsun Zan had built a large defensive tower and stocked it with ample supplies, preparations that might have made it a formidable refuge during a siege. Yuan Shao’s forces nevertheless found a way to overcome the position: they dug a tunnel beneath the tower and set it on fire. The tactic turned the defenders’ stronghold into a trap, and the tower’s collapse left Gongsun Zan with no route of escape.
The Fall of Gongsun Zan
Facing defeat inside the collapsing position, Gongsun Zan killed his wife and children and then died by suicide. His end makes the capture of the tower more than a military reversal: it destroys his household along with his command and removes him from the contest between the regional powers. The account gives no further detail about the siege’s duration or the wider terms of the victory.
News and Political Consequences
News of the defeat reaches Cao Cao while Liu Bei is with him. Liu Bei is deeply saddened because Gongsun Zan was a dear friend; Cao Cao, by contrast, immediately considers the political consequence. Yuan Shao has become a stronger opponent, and Cao Cao recognizes that the victory alters the balance between them.
The episode also introduces a larger concern: Yuan Shao’s brother Yuan Shu is bringing him the Imperial Seal, believing Yuan Shao better able to wield its authority. Cao Cao fears that the brothers, united with this potent symbol of imperial power, will constitute a formidable foe. The Battle of Yijing thus functions both as the end of Gongsun Zan’s resistance and as a warning that Yuan Shao’s growing military strength may be joined to a rival claim of political authority.
